The genetic control of grain yield and harvest index in three common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) crosses grown in intercrop and sole crop were studied by generation means analysis. Each cross had Turtle Soup (TS39) as the male parent, and the female parents were 2602, 7775, and Gloria. For each cross, six generations were grown; namely, parents (P1, P2), F2S, F4S from backcrosses to both parents (BC1 and BC2). Experiments were conducted in two locations in a split-plot design with cropping systems as main plots and generations as subplots. At harvest, ten bean plants were taken randomly from the two central rows of each subplot. Grain yield and harvest index were determined for each plant. Generation means and their standard errors within intercrop and sole crop expressed on an individual plant basis were determined and subjected to generation means analysis. Genetic effects for grain yield and harvest index were different for each cross in each system. Generally, there were more significant genetic effects in intercrop than in sole crop for both traits, the only exception being for grain yield in the cross Gloria × TS39. Additive gene action was significant for grain yield in two crosses in intercrop and for one cross in sole crop. For harvest index, additive effects were significant for 2602 × TS39 in sole crop, for 7775 × TS39 in intercrop, and for Gloria × TS39 in both systems. Dominance was significant for all crosses and traits in intercrop. In sole crop, dominance was important for grain yield in the cross Gloria × TS39 and for harvest index in the cross 7775 × TS39. Significant epistasis occurred in all crosses for both traits and in all cases interacted with cropping systems. Most significant epistatic effects for grain yield occurred in sole crop; however, for harvest index they occurred in intercrop. Significant additive × additive epitasis for grain yield occurred for the cross Gloria × TS39 in sole crop. Harvest index showed significant additive × additive epistasis in the same cross in intercrop and in 2602 × TS39 in sole crop.
