Brazil stands out as one of the countries with major potential for the development of aquaculture. However, in the absence of an Aquaculture National Program of Research and Development, the national demand for fish products has not been met. In 2000, Brazil was in 18th place on the list of countries that produce cultivated organisms as published by FAO. Despite the rapid growth of the Brazilian aquaculture industry in the last few years, the activity´s potential in Brazil is not apparent. In these context, a country with the continental dimensions of Brazil, and the diversity of institutions engaged in aquaculture - more than 90 at the present - will not reach a competitive developmental stage without a national program of research and development. A program of this sort is fundamental to guarantee a strategic and integrated vision of underway reseach projects, and moreover, to facilitate the cooperation among the several national and international partners. |
