The coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae), is one of the major pests of coffee crops. The insect is responsible for great economic losses in coffee-growing regions favorable to the infestation. The development of cultivars resistant to coffee leaf miner is crucial to aid in the reduction of pest’s pressure and damage to coffee plantations. This study evaluated two commercial cultivars Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 and MGS Paraíso 2 in comparison with 29 Coffea arabica × C. racemosa progenies regarding their resistance to coffee leaf miner. The assessment was conducted through bioassays of oviposition preference, biological performance, and assessments of photosynthetic pigments and leaf anatomy. There was no antixenosis resistance in the progenies, evidenced by the similar percentage of leaf infestation and number of eggs per leaf area among coffee genotypes. However, larval hatching was reduced or inhibited in the progenies evaluated, expressing high levels of antibiosis resistance. Hypersensitivity response was also observed in some progenies. Photosynthetic pigments and leaf anatomy parameters were related to coffee resistance in the progenies, but the correlation varied according to the plant. The egg-induced resistance observed is an important trait in coffee progenies that can be utilized in genetic breeding programs. Understanding the resistance mechanisms in C. arabica × C. racemosa offspring will further contribute to the development of resistant cultivars and integrated pest management strategies against the coffee leaf miner.
