TRANSITION BETWEEN RYEGRASS PASTURE AND IRRIGATED RICE CULTIVATION. ABSTRACT: The rice crop and beef cattle farming have been present in southern Brazil for over a century. There is evidence that integrating these activities brings benefits to both producers and the environment. However, there are still some bottlenecks that need to be revisited by research. One of these points is the transition between the pasture phase and rice cultivation. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of treatments applied to pasture and pre-planting of rice on establishment, productivity, and seed quality. The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Embrapa Pecuária Sul, located in the Campanha region, in Bagé/RS/Brazil. The experiment was carried out between April 26, 2013, and April 17, 2014, totaling 356 days. The ryegrass pasture was managed under two cutting regimes: Low (15 cm) and High (25 cm), and desiccated 40 and 14 days before rice planting. Total dry matter production was evaluated. At rice planting, two types of fertilizers were applied in the planting row: 18- 27-00 (lower nitrogen) and 27-27-00 (higher nitrogen). The effect of all these pre- treatments was evaluated on establishment (number of seedlings.m-2) and seed production (kg.ha-1). Germination and crude protein content tests were also performed on the seeds. There was a significant difference in dry matter production when pastures were desiccated 40 and 14 days before planting. The other results did not show significant differences between treatments, indicating that direct rice planting on a winter ryegrass pasture, desiccated 14 days before planting, is feasible. This management enables integration between rice cultivation and cattle farming. MenosTRANSITION BETWEEN RYEGRASS PASTURE AND IRRIGATED RICE CULTIVATION.
