The current agricultural frontier region in Brazil is located in the north and northeast of the country. This zone has specific characteristics, such as low altitudes, high temperatures, and, in some parts, restricted water regimes. The soils are highly weathered and acidic, with low buffering capacity, low organic matter (OM) content, and considerable occurrence of sandy or gravelly soils. The combination of these edaphoclimatic conditions results in low capacity to retain nutrients and water. |
