Abstract: This article is a comparative analysis of the conditions of organization and coaching of collective initiatives and often public supported projects to promote and improve the valorization of these local small scale cheeses. It is argued on comparative and reflexive observations. The objectives and stakes of each stakeholder involved were considered. The analyzed initiatives were identified from various projects in several Mediterranean Northern and Southern countries: promotional campaigns, workshops, networks and meetings, regional events grouping cheeses shows, processing demonstrations, thematic routes, cheese contests. Around the Mediterranean Area, small scale and farm made cheeses, mostly with sheep or goat milk, are seen as holders of local know-how. Their know ? how are related to animal production systems and cheese making processing technologies. A supposed very old rural heritage, these cheeses are generally considered as a possible vehicle of economic and social development for less favored rural and mountainous areas. For each initiative, we particularly focused on what type of organizations or institutions has led the project: Regional Public Extension, National Park Administration, Universities or Research centers, public organization, professional association ? The specific situation of the Mediterranean area is compared and discussed regarding other situations all over the world where the markets situations are different. We argue on the main advantages of the local sheep and goat low input production systems for the social, economic and environmental development of many rural areas regarding. These results should help decision makers evaluate the usefulness of such projects in the future. The Mediterranean case studied here has to be seen as an example to consider the impact of promotions elsewhere in other situations.
