When rumen pH was maintained by feeding sodium bicarbonate, lactose reduced rumen protozoa, reduced rumen ammonia and increased microbial (bacterial) protein supply, compared with sucrose. Lactose has a specific effect in reducing protozoal numbers which results in increased bacterial protein outflow in addition to effects on rumen pH. |
