Cortisone acetate and hydrocortisone acetate increased sperm concentration and total sperm per ejaculate, and decreased the fructose concentration in 5 of 7 bulls. Motility, percentage live, and citric acid concentration were not changed. Of seven normal rabbits treated with cortisone acetate and hydrocortisone acetate, sperm concentration increased in four, was unchanged in two, and decreased in one. Of four adrenalectomized rabbits, sperm concentration was increased in three and decreased in one. Fructose concentration was increased in both normal and adrenalectomized rabbits. Corticosterone had no effect on sperm and fructose concentration in normal or adrenalectomized rabbits. Testosterone increased citric acid concentration in the semen of four of five bulls. Sperm concentration was decreased in all five bulls, but only in one was the decrease statistically significant. Supplementary glucocorticoids caused changes in semen characteristics that were similar to those found in bulls with fascicular adrenal tumors and hypertrophy of the fascicular-reticular zones. |
