Changing needs brought about by new production requirements or shifts in consumer demands are characteristically responded to only very slowly by existing breeds of sheep. Such needs can sometimes be met much more quickly by new synthetic breeds which combine in a true-breeding type the complementary attributes of existing breeds. The Columbia and Targhee are examples of breeds developed in the recent past to satisfy changes in range sheep-production requirements. More recently, interest has developed in more prolific, productive types of sheep adapted to intensive management systems. Because the combinations of desired attributes do not exist together in any one breed, these attributes are being brought together from existing complimentary breeds. The Polypay is one example of such a synthetic breed. Comparisons between the Polypay and existing established breeds at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station show that the Polypay may satisfy production requirements as a prolific breed adapted to intensive management systems and also as a superior producing breed when herded under range conditions. Future social changes and technological advances will undoubtedly give rise to new situations that can profitably be responded to by combining into a new breed the genetic potentials of existing breeds. |
