Sheep were given mash or pellets containing dried mixed forest grass or sorghum straw as the only source of roughage. Samples of rumen fluid were collected before and at 2, 4 and 6 h after feeding. The concentration of total nitrogen, protein N insoluble in trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and residual N were significantly higher in rumen fluid of sheep fed on pelleted rations. These values were higher with pelleted grass than with straw. These results suggest that pelletng improves the utilization of low quality roughages by rumen microbes because it is associated with lower ammonia nitrogen and higher TCA-insoluble nitrogen in the strained rumen liquor. The studies suggest that dry mixed forest grass and sorghum straw can be used economical sources of roughage in the preparation of complete feeds for ruminants. |
