The fertility level of 3 breeds of exotic sheep i.e., Rambouillet, Romney Marsh and South Down, is reported. The lambing percent did not differ significantly among the 3 breeds (varying from 71.7% in Romney to 86.6% in South Down) and was comparable with that of local (Gaddi) breed (75%). About 50-60% of the ewes in the flock (of all the 3 breeds) lambed once during a year and the remaining 40-50% ewes remained barren. On an average, 1.5 services were required for successful conception for all the 3 breeds. In the 1st estrus 61, 65 and 73% ewes of Romney Marsh, Rambouillet and South Down, respectively, conceived and lambed to 1st service, and a further 11, 13 and 10% of ewes, respectively, conceived to service in the 2nd estrus. The repeatability of the lambing percent was negative and low in Rambouillet (-4.1) and South Down (-11.7), but it was positive and moderate (30.7%) in Romney Marsh. |
