The first edition of this book, published in 2003, was written as part of the 60th anniversary celebration of creation of the former Agronomic Institute of the North (IAN) in 1999. The first publication listed events, people and institutions which were directly or indirectly associated with the history of agricultural technology in the Amazon. For this English version, the main events until 2012 were added. They were quite emblematic for both the Amazon region and Brazil, indicating new synergies of changes. The strengthening of family farming, the promotion of Rio + 20 and the approval of the New Forest Code (2012), the implementation of the bioenergy hub based on palm oil, major floods and the lowest ebb tides of the Amazon river, the deforestation and fires reduction since 2004, are some of the important events which happened and are covered by the English version. |
