Conteúdo:  Abstract: The feeding behaviour of goats on rangelands is interpreted here as a compromise between the search after pleasant hedonic sensations and post-ingestive feedbacks. In the process of learning, young animals discriminate familiar from novel foods and acquire feeding habits. While attempting to create order and predictability in time and space, through habit, they accumulate additional information by exploring their environment, through novelty. Therefore, a goat's feeding day is a sequence, repeated on each foraging site on the range, of sampling bouts (low linear intake), eager foraging bouts on the main species present (high linear intake) and diversification bouts (low linear intake). Whenever possible, goats will include browse as major component in the diet. Their feeding behaviour relies on the presence of tannin-adapted ruminal flora, and superior nitrogen recycling. Browse is rich in toxins (tannins, terpenes, alkaloids). Goat's particular feeding behavior allows goats to alleviate the negative effects of toxins on ruminal environment and to ingest balanced and steady diets. These diets are of medium nutritious value, i.e. their content of limiting nutrients such as crude protein and energy is not maximised temporally, and they do not vary greatly in chemical composition throughout the year. They are compatible with the internal productive rhythm of local goats, aimed at maximising the odds of successful reproduction, but not milk production. Adequate feed su... Mostrar Tudo
