The present water availability per capita in South America amounts to about 30.000 m3 year-1, and is among the highest in the world. Nevertheless, highly densely populated areas are suffering from water scarcity. In this study, future trends in the lived experience of global change are analysed, with a focus on water demand, water availability, water scarcity and flooding in South America. These issues are approached with an innovative method that combines a quantitative analysis based on a global model for nutrient transport, Global NEWS, and a qualitative interpretation based on the Cultural Theory and the lived experience concept. Four quantitative scenarios for South America are interpreted by including specific characteristics such as social inequalities, different climates, abundance of resources, and regional integration paths. All elements convey in four different storylines which highlight the most important results of the analysis and describe the future lived experience of global change. One such conclusion is that the present hydrology of the continent is strongly affected by demographic, economic and climatic factors. However, in the future, the first two factors may generally produce stronger pressures than climate change on the hydrology in South America. |
