High-throughput next generation sequencing of the genomes and transcriptomes of crop species and wild relatives is facilitating identification of genes and mechanisms involved in plant immunity, as well as increasing our knowledge of the gene pool and diversity of available genetic resources for crop improvement. NGS data is also applicable for large-scale genetic marker development, facilitating genetic map saturation and marker-assisted breeding. This genomics-assisted breeding is anticipated to become widely employed, accelerating both genotype to phenotype prediction and downstream plant transformation. The unigene datasets under development by our group, exploited for gene discovery, transcription profiling and large scale gene-based marker development, will contribute both towards the understanding of genes involved in plant immunity processes as well as long-term strategies for Musa genetic improvement and disease management. |
