Considerable economic losses are caused by the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus. Control of this bovine ectoparasite is largely through the use of chemicals but development of acaricide resistance hampers control programs. Vaccines such as GavacTM and TickGardPLUS (1) can be helpful in fighting the parasite and can reduce the use of pesticides through an integration of the vaccination protocol with strategic acaricide applications. Because of inconsistent efficacy results with the existing anti-cattle tick vaccines, we are investigating the use of a Bm86 antigen cloned and expressed from a local tick population near Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil |
