This present study lends support to the conclusions of Rothwell (1964) that cellular processes associated with hair formation are reflected in enlarged nucleoli. In view of the intimate relationship which exists between the nucleolus and RNA metabolism (Goldstein and lVMicou, 1959; Perry, Hell, and Errera, 1961), it would seem that these enilarged nucleoli may indeed be an indication of a higher degree of metabolic activity within these hair-producing cells. This suggestion of metabolic differences between cells of diverse maturation potentials again indicates the possible value of the relatively simple system of the grass root epidermis in the interpretation of patterns of development and morphogenesis. |
