The concept of sustainability appears frequently in contemporary thought. It can be found in a book by the U.S. Vice-President (Gore 1992), on the pages of news magazines (Linden 1993), in the writings of bureaucrats and development experts, and as the cornerstone of the ecological research agenda for the nineties (Lubchenco et al. 1991). Before it is cynically dismissed as a hollow buzzword, we wish to consider what it is, whether it is achievable, and the role of ecology in achieving it. |
