Embrapa's banana germplasm collection id the largest of this crop in Brazil, with approximately 400 accessions. Ninety percent consists of cultivated accessions and 10% of wild species with predominance of Musa acuminata and balbisiana. Most accessions are diploids AA followed by accessions of the AAB group (most cultivated bananas in Brazil belong to this group such as Silver, Pacovan, Dwarfed Silver, Apple, Mysore and Terra). Triploids AAA are also present in high frequency. Accessions of the ABB, AAAB and AAAA groups are also represented, but in lower frequency. The conservation of the accessions is carried out under field conditions (4,0 m x 2,0 m x 2,0 m), with five plants per accession. As a complementary strategy of conservation, part of the germplasm (around 20%) has been preserved in vitro. A morphologic characterization was carried out in 300 accessions using 113 descriptors (IPGRI-INIBAP/CIRAD, 1996 - IPGRI-INIBAP/CIRAD. Descriptors for banana (Musa spp). IPGRI: Rome. 1996. 56 p.). A molecular characterization was carried out in 83 accessions using microsatellites and another characterization was performed in 221 accession using DArT markers (diployds, triployds and tetraploydes). Other characterizations were also carried out evaluating accessions for salinity tolerance, functional properties (vitamin C, carotenoid content, flavonoils, polyphenols) nemathodes and diseases (Panama disease, yellow and black Sigatoka). |
