Insect carriers of the bacterium causing the canker disease of mango (Mangifera indica). One of the most important and damaging diseases of mango (mangifera indica) is the one known as "canker", caused by a bacterial agent, Erwinia sp. Two means of dispersal of this disease are infected scions used in mango propagation, and some of the insects associated with this tree. To obtain evidence regarding the latter. Insect were collected biweely in two infected orchards. The bacteria they carried were isolated, first in nutrient agar and then selected on Kado's D3 medium. Tests on potato disks were also conducted. Bacteria obtained were purified and inoculated on mango fruits. Those isolates that caused lesions were identified as the genera Serratia, Enterobacter,Klebsiella and Erwinia. The last one was isolated from Dysdercus spp., Trigona spp., Apis mellifera, Ceratitis capitata and Anastrepha spp. |
