In New Zealand some meat companies now pay for lamb carcasses based on the weight of individual carcass cuts. Data on 1755 lambs from 106 sires, from the TRIGG Romney progeny test was available for use in ASREML to estimate genetic parameters for carcass cuts. The heritability of fat depth GR, the weight of frenched rack, striploin, boneless leg, neck fillet, boneless shoulder, flaps and fillets, adjusted for carcass weight, were 0.16, 0.09, 0.31, 0.24, 0.14, 0.11, 0.18 and 0.41 respectively. Genetic correlations between cuts that significantly contribute to carcass value (striploin, frenched rack and boneless leg) were positive, however, there were some negative associations between these cuts and other carcass cuts. Overall, it should be possible to improve carcass value through increasing the weight of cuts that significantly contribute to carcass value through genetic selection. However, further data needs to be collected to estimate genetic parameters on a wider range of data. |
