Preliminary results of the number of lambs born and weaned per ewe lambing for FecB heterozygous and non-carrier ewes introduced into or produced in smallholder flocks in Maharashtra State of India are presented. The FecB mutation had a positive effect on number of lambs born but number of lambs weaned did not increase as much due to higher mortality among lambs of introduced heterozygous ewes. Possible major reasons for this mortality could be the proportion of Garole breed among introduced ewes, adaptation problems and discriminatory treatment of introduced ewes by flock owners. More information on the lambing performance of heterozygous ewes born in smallholder flocks is needed before a firm conclusion can be drawn about the benefits of the FecB mutation in a traditional sheep rearing system in a dry monsoonal climate. |
