Stylosanthes humilis cv. Paterson, S. hamata. cv. Verano and S. scabra cv. Fitzroy were sown on a duplex soil containing low levels of available phosphorus in January 1975. Superphosphate applications of 0 or 5 kg P ha-1 were made in the first year. Rates of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 kg P ha-1 were applied at the start of the second growing season to plots which received 5 kg ha-1 initially. Growth and nutrient contents of these legumes were measured over four years. Anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) infected the legumes in each year. Paterson did not regenerate in the second year after severe infection, however Verano and Fitzroy regenerated throughout the experiment. Fitzroy was severely infected by anthracnose in the third and fourth years. There was no visible response to applied phosphorus in the establishment year. Dry matter yields of Verano and Fitzroy increased with phosphorus application only in the second year. Without phosphorus application, the legumes produced 2,000 to 3,000 kg dry matter ha-1 annum-1 in 1976 and 1977. Phosphorus content increased slightly but nitrogen content remained constant with increasing phosphorus fertilisation. |
