In an epizootic of keratoconjunctivitis in a herd of 300 milking goats that lasted approximately 2 months, the clinical signs were hyperemic conjunctivitis, ocasional follicular conjunctivitis, iritis, and keratitis. By cytologic examination of conjunctival smears of infected goats, pleomorphic forms of a mycoplasmic agent were found. Results of microbiological cultural examination indicated that mycoplasma organisms were in scrapings of conjunctival tissue. By electron microscopy, Microorganisms with the ultrastructural characteristics typical of mycoplasma were revealed within the diseased tissue from some of the goats. Clinical signs of keratoconjunctivitis were reproduced in 1 goat exposed by instillation of the isolate obtained from 1 of the affected goats in the herd. Chlamydia, isolated from the herd in the in the preceding year during an epizootic of abortion, was not re-isolated during the epizootic of keratoconjunctivitis. |
