Abstract: The ability of rumen tissue to remove from the blood and to metabolize organic acids was studied by circulating blood containing either labeled acetate or labeled butyrate through the vascular system of the isolated goat rumen maintained in a perfusion apparatus. Both compounds were removed from arterial blood by the rumen tissue. At the same time there were quantitative increases in unlabeled blood volatile fatty acids, indicating absorption from the rumen contents into the blood. Beat-hydroxybutyrate was the main product isolated from the metabolism of butyrate. Only small amounts of C14 from acetate were incorporated into the organic acids assayed. |
