The effect of three sowing densities (1, 2 and 3 t/ha of vegetative seed) on the establishment of the varieties 67, 68 and Callie of the Cynodon genus was studied in a typical red ferrallitic soil through a factorial model 3 .times. 3 in random blocks with 4 replicates. There was no significant interaction between the sowing densities and the varieties in the measurements under study. One month after sowing, the number of tillers/m2 and the percentage of area covered was higher in bermuda grass cv Callie and both indicators were higher in the population density. The variety Callie showed the highest sward height (33,3 cm) and the longest stolon length (110 cm). The sowing density did not influence the stolon length, although the sward height was higher in the treatment of 3 t/ha of seeds. In the first cut (90 days after sowing), DM [dry matter] yield was higher in Callie and in the density of 3 t/ha. Nonetheless, in the second cut yield did not differ significantly between bermuda grasses nor between sowing densities. The botanical composition was similar in all treatments. Callie showed a better performance in the first establishment stage. The possibility of using between 1 and 2 t/ha of vegetative seed for the establishment of these varieties in soils low weed infestation and adequate humidity during and after sowing is discussed. Further studies under different soil and climatic conditions are required. |
