Progesterone content of corpora lutea in seven normal and twelve aborter does was determined by competitive protein binding. Luteal progesterone in normal does increased to a maximum of 27,02 µg on the 112th day of gestation, and then declined to 10,93 µg on the 140th day. Corpora lutea of aborters had significantly less progesterone than that of normal does. This difference was more accentuated in aborters which expelled apparently normal fresh foetuses than in those whose foetuses had died in utero in an oedematous state. It is concluded that impaired luteal function may be the responsible factor leading to expulsion of the foetus, be it dead or alive, but not for causing foetal death in utero. |
