Dry matter (DM) yield and forage quality of tropical grasses, a legume, and grass-legume associations as affected by nitrogen (N) fertilizer levels were studied during 1984. The treatments consisted of 'Florigraze' rhizoma peanut (Arachis glabrata Benth.), 'Pensacola' bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge), Tifton 'Hybrid-81' bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] 'Survenola' digitgrass (DigitariaX umfoloziHall), and the association of the grasses with the legume at there levels of N (0, 150 and 300 kg ha-1 yr-1). Dry matter yields were determined, and ground forage samples were analyzed for crude protein (CP) and in vitroorganic matter digestibility (IVOMD). With no applied N, over 70% of the total forage harvested from the grass-legume associations consisted of Florigraze. When N was applied it resulted in a significant increase in DM yield of the grasses in pure stands and in association with Florigraze. Additional forage produced per kg of N was highest when 150 kg ha-1 yr-1 were applied. The highest DM yields were obtained from Survenola and Hybrid-81 in pure stands and in association with Florigraze over all N levels. A first N application in early spring increased DM yield of Florigraze. The association of the legume with the grasses, with no N, resulted in 100% to 300% increase in total DM yield as compared with pure stands. Crude protein concentration was significantly increased by both N fertilization and the association with Florigraze. Florigraze showed ability to compete successfully with weeds and the grasses even when N was supplied. Associations of Florigraze with Hybrid-81 or Survenola fertilized with N have a great potential for high DM yields of high quality forage for both grazing and hay production.
