Stability parameters of yiled (b and s2d) and of its basic components such as number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and weight of 100 seeds were estimated for 12 dried bean cultivars grown in 11 different environments (Years and locations) in the south of the State of Minas Gerais. Cultivar "Costa Rica 1031" showed the greatest yield potential, high stability and b higher than one, whereas cultivar "Vi. 1011" showed high productivity and stability, but b equal to one. Also, cultivar "Pintado" showed high stability and an intermediate level of productivity, but the b value was lower than one. Cultivars "Carioca 1030" and "ESAL 1", which are widely accepted, showed low stability. In addition. It as observed that the response of yield and of its basiccomponents was independent of environmental variation. It was concluded that: a) only the stability response of number of pods per plant could be useful in the selection of cultivars stable for grain yield; b) the high repeatability value obtained for grain yield (0.7777) and the repeatability values for b (0.3033) and sd2 (0.2084) show that, in a breeding program, it would be easier to select for grain yield than for stability. |
