Previous reports from literature are indicative that the efficiency of maize plants for grain yield is partially dependent on tassel size and prolificacy. In the present work, estimates of genetic correlation coefficients were obtained for the following traits: grain yield (Y), tassel branch number (NB) and prolificacy or number of ears per plant (NE); the interrelationship between traits was considered as an important parameter half-sib progenies from the populations. Suwan, which were evaluated in 1980. Estimates of the genetic (additive) correlation coefficients were: 0,941, -0,441 and -0,648 for the combinations YxNE, YxNB and NExNB, respectively. Partial genetic correlations indicated that the effect of tassel size on grain yield occurs directly through prolificacy, as shown by the estimated coefficients: 0,959, 0,655 and -0.767 for the combinations (Y,NE). NB, (Y,NB). NE and (NE,NB).y, respectively. |
