Modern poultry production in Brazil started in the 1960's showing since then, very fast development, especially from the middle of the 1970's, when the government gave strong incentives through rural credit for investment and working capital. From 1975 to 1986 for example, production increased almost three times rising from 586000 to 1639000 tonnes (FAO, 1986). During the initial period production was carried out by independent farmers with support of many hatchery houses which were involved in direct import of the parent stock needed to produce commercial day-old chicks. According to APINCO (1986), because of the risk to poultry health that such imports represented, the government approved a law in 1965, allowing imports only of the grand-parent generation. Production of all the other genetic generations was to be done internally from the imported grand-parents. |
