The effect of population density on an insecty population is complex. Populations in nature interact with such a variable environment that the influence of density, per se, is subject to analysis only through highly sophisticated techniques that separate the direct effects of density from the indirect effects that are concurrent, with increased numbers per unit area. The influence of population density under laboratory conditions has been investigated repeatedly (1,3,12,32,33,76,79,105). However, the specific influence of density in self-perpetuating laboratory colonies, while important, has seldom been the subject of research (66,115,116) although it has been included tangentially in a recent book on mass rearing technology (121) and in a review of problems. |
