Corn silage has often been classified as a forage feed, and the assumption has been made that its nutritive value decreases with maturity. Research reports regarding the digestibility and feed value of corn silage made at different stages of maturity have been conflicting (Huber et al., 1963; Noller et al., 1963; Pratt et al., 1964; Klosterman et al., 1964). The digestibility of the cellulosic portions of the corn plant as affected by matury has not been studied. Furthermore, the mature of the soluble carbohydrate content of the plant during ear maturation is not well know. These two carbohydrate constituents of the corn plant were the subject of the study reported herein. |
