The three double hybrids, commercially as S.R. numbers I, VI and VIII, are all noticiable susceptible to the leaf blight caused by the fungus Helminthosporium turcicum. In trials on the Salisbury Experiment Station, yield losses as great as 30% have been recorded in seasons when the weather has been particulary favourable for the development of the disease. A considerable degree of resistance to this blight is therefore essential in any inbred line to be used in the development of new hybrids to replace those in present use. |
