The in vitro regeneration of coconut from root tips was studied by an Overseas Development Administration (ODA) funded team at East Malling Research Station (EMRS) from october 1970 to november 1980. Despite surface sterilization a proportion of cultured roots was usually contamined by fungi of which Phitophthora palmivora (Butl.) Butl. was among the most frequent. This widespread tropical species causes important diseases of several major crops including bud rot of coconut (Chee, 1974) but previously has not been reported in association with the roots of coconut. |
