The C horizons of many Iowa soils derived from loess contain several hundred parts per million of dilute acid-soluble phosphorus (13). In spite of this high solubility, the phosphorus in some of these soils has a low avaliability to such plants as corn and sudan grass, althought in general a fair avaliability to alfafa. In the C horizon of other soils, however, the phosphorus has a high avaliability to all these crops even when the amount of dilute acid soluble phosphorus is considerably less (16). In view of these rresults it seemed desirable to undertake a study of the forms of phosphorus present in the C horizon of these soils. This was done largely by comparing the phosphorus solubility of various naturally occuring phosphate minerals. |
