Inheritamce of elaterinide, the main bitter substance of watermelon fruits, was studied by spectrophotometric quantitative determinations in crosses involving a bitter mutant of Hawkesbury (high-bitter) with Hawkesbury (mon-bitter) and Accession 242 (low-bitter. Lack of bitterness in fruits is due to a single recessive suppressor gene, su active in the presence of the gene, Bi, for plant bitterness. Organoleptic tests indicated that the seedling stage of both Hawkesbury and its bitter mutant are bitter. A modidier gene, Mo, lacking dominance, is proposed to explain the quantitative differences in elaterinide content of bitter fruits. |
