Since 1980, we have made some modest attempts phenotypically select the Azul (roancoloured), Graúna (black coat color) and Nambi (reduced ears) goat types, along with the traditional and crossbred Brazilian goat populations. The traditional standardised goats were purposely cross-bred with exotic dairy goat breeds after 1980. These included the Moxotó, Gurguéia, Canindé and Marota. Only Moxotó and Canindé goats have Herd Books. It is possible to register their crosses, as long as the registers include a phenotypic inspection. In Brazil, common sense is to interpret the mating of local and exotic populations with similar phenotypical types as good-breeding, not cross-breeding. On one farm, Moxotó goats (badger face and roan coloured), and Gurguéia goats (badger face standard and chamois coloured) were crossbred with French Alpine. The French Alpine breed was introduced in Brazil around 1983 in the South and 1984 in the Northeast region of the country. With time, the Moxotó cross-bred was called Branca Sertaneja ("Blacklands White") and Moxotó leiteira ("Dairy Moxotó"); and the Gurguéia cross-bred was called Parda Sertaneja ("Blacklands Brown"). On two farms, Canindé goats (black and tan coat color) were crossbred with the British Alpine breed. The British Alpine was introduced in Brazil around 1985. One of the only two Marota (white coat colour, pigmented skin and mucous membrane) herds existing, was absorbed by Saanen breed. The objective of this study is to show the geographic localizations of some these herds.
