Abstract: Four voluntary intake trials were conducted with freshly cut Kentucky 31 tall rescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) forage beginning May 7, July 21, November 3 and February 12. Forage was harvested daily from randomly selected areas. Two metabolism trials were conducted with sheep fed dried tall rescue (TF) that had been harvested at approximately the midpoint of each voluntary intake period. Alfalfa hay was used as a reference feed for the metabolism and voluntary intake trials. Apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), cell wall constituents (CWC), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and cellulose was higher (P<.05) for TF harvested in the summer (May and July) compared with winter (November and February) and for November compared with February. May harvested TF was higher (P<.05) in apparent digestibility of DM, OM and CP than July TF. Fecal excretion of N was higher (P<.05) and N retention was less (P<.05) for February compared with November harvested TF. Ruminal NH3-N levels were higher (P<.05) in May and in November than in July and February harvested TF, respectively. The DM intake of TF, expressed as a percentage of the reference alfalfa hay, was 63.3, 72.1, 87.7 and 53.9 for the harvest dates of May, July, November and February, respectively. Relative intake was higher (P<.05) for November than February, but no differences were detected for TF harvested in either the winter or summer, or in May or July. The relative voluntary intake of digestible DM in TF harvested at the respective harvest dates was calculated to be 73.4, 71.6, 92.2 and 39.2%.
