Net irrigation requirements for automated turf-irrigation systems were simulated for irrigation systems controlled using a: 1) Soil Moisture Sensor (SMS), 2) Rainfall Shutoff Device (\tRSD) and 3) using a schedule on a long-term analysis of climatic demands. The lowest irrigation requirement was for the SMS controlled system, followed by the RSD system, with a substantially higher value for the scheduled system. A comparison with field evaluations of irrigation systems leads the authors to conclude that much higher water savings can be obtained in Florida by improving the quality of irrigation design than those that can be obtained by theuse of SMSs and RSDs. |
