The development of Bidens gardneri under different photoperiods and two types of soil, cerrado and forest soils, was studied. Growth in terms of plant height was related to an interaction between photoperiod and type of soil, plants growing higher in cerrado soil in 12,14 and 16h photoperiods, whereas in forest soil plants were higher in the longer photoperiods. The difference in height was a result of internode length and not of number of nodes. When nutrient solution was added to washed sand and the plants were kept in different photoperiods no interaction was shown; only the nutrient treatments affected growth. If water was available plants could produce new basal shoots at the end of the annual cycle. It is suggested that the species can behave as annual or perennial depending on the frequency of rain in the cerrado region. |
