The use of satellite data for monitoring the atmospheric and terrestrial environments, and their integration with other spatial data and temporal models using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), is described. It is envisaged that these techniques will allow weather and precipitation events to be monitored, along with changes in vegetation and soil condition, with the view to improving drought preparedness, monitoring and management on a regional and continental scale. Some of the problems and progress in integrating the data sets and models to produce specific products are discussed in relation to two case histories. |
