Pineapples are the most important fruit crop grown in the Eastern Cape Province where the annual yield is generally in excess of 130 000 tonnes. However, a problem which has been causing increasing concern amongst growers of this region, particularly those in the Bathurst area, is the gradual decline in the vigour and yields of Smooth Cayenne plants after two or three cycles. This article is concerned with the effectof soil fumigation and potassium sulphate applications on Smooth Cayenne plants grown in the Bathurst area on soil which had been in continuous pineapple production for over 14 years. |
