This report provides a description of the karyotypes of 315 species of the subfamily Eristalinae plus limited data (such as the 2n number of chromosomes) for 22 other species of this subfamily. Included are descriptions of the chromosome complements of four species of the subfamily Microdontinae. The 2n number of chromosomes of the species studied ranges from 8 to 14 plus in some species up to 44 microchromosomes. Three species have 14 chromosomes, 171 have 12, 103 have 10,51 have 8 and 11 other species have additional microchromosomes. The figures for total chromosome complement length suggest that there is correlation between number of chromosome and total complement length. Various sex chromosome systems have been found, with a great variety in the Brachyopini, Eristalini and Milesiini. Al published references to the chromosomes of the Eristalinae and Microdontinae (Milesiinae) species that we found, including those previously published by us, have either been listed or decribed in detail. Attempts to correlate modification of karyotypes with divergence of taxonomic units indicate thar changes in karyotype have not regularly been accompanied by morphological modifications of value in the classification of taxonmic units. |
