The object of the present paper was to study the efficacy, tolerance and convenience of application of the new nematocidal substance febantel in various galenical formulations and of the combination of febantel and metrifonate in paste form in the horse in Cuba. For this purpose 232 horses were available, 16 of which had been earmarked for slaughter; in the latter, as well as the coprological samples, an examination of the gastrointestinal tract for Gasterophilus larvae was possible; for comparison, 20 animals were treated with a combination of metrifonate and niclosamide which has been used in Cuba for years. In 4 trials, the results of which are tabulated and discussed in detail, an approximately 95 to 100% efficacy of febantel against the adult forms of large and small strongylids, ascarids and oxyurids was ascertained; the combination with metrifonate produced an average efficacy against 2nd and 3rd larvae of Gasterophilus intestinalis and G. nasalis of 98%. The previously described good tolerance of febantel and its combination with metrifonate was confirmed. The paste in particular was distinguished by its ease of administration in the horse, thus introducing new dimension in the therapy of this domestic species. |
