The different models used to assess agricultural periodicals of Latin America and the Caribbean are reviewed. Some of the factors that led librarians and information specialists to search for these methods were the increasing prices of journals, the constant and permanent inflation of national currencies, unavailability of space in libraries, the continuous reduction in library budgets, the gap between acquisition policies and user needs, and the continuous increase in science specialization. The models discussed inc1ude productivity studies, analysis of the utilization of journals, studies on requests for photocopies, studies on bibliographic citations and estimation of impact, the users' opinion, the cost-benefit and the Rio Piedras models, indexing of secondary services and their evaluation, among others. Empirical research has followed a quantitative approach in attempts to derive quality from quantity. Most of the empirical efforts have concentrated on searching and identifying a core list of journals able to meet a large demando Originally the models are North American and, in general, no new contributions have been made to them. Emphasis has been on productivity (Bradford Law), use of journals, and users' opinion models. The Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária EMBRAPA, Brazil, is the institution that has been most concerned about applying and searching for models to evaluate Latin Americanjournals, thus most ofthe regional experience on this topic is concentrated in Brazil.
