The genesis of the soils of a 400 hectare detailed soil survey mapping area in the Upper Amazon Basin of Peru was found to be related to the initial sedimentary materials deposited and the position on the landscape. The area in composed of a dissected uplant and a recent flood plain. The initial materials of the upland fine upward, have abrupt vertical and horizontal textural changes and other characteristics that are associated with a fluvial depositional environment. The recent flood plain has similar characteristic of fluvial deposition and iss composed of alluvium from the Andes Mountains. The materials of the lowland generally contain 15 percent feldspar in the sand fraction and 90 percent smectite in the clay fraction while those of upland contain greater than 90 percent quartz in the sand fraction and 40 percent kaolinite in the clay fraction. Three geomorphic surface were recognized. Depositional surface 1 is the oldest and includes the flat topped hills in the dissected upland. Surface 2 includes an erosional portion which cuts surface 1 and the beds below its and grades to the valley floor for the depositional portion of surface 2. Surface 2 is younger that surface 1 but the same age as depositional surface 3 consisting of the recent flood plain which is generally flat. The water table levels are dependent on the location on the landscape and materials present. They are generally deep in the upland positions and shallow in the lowlands but vary on the back slopes.
