The estrous induction by artificial photoperiod allows the anticipation of the breeding season in spring, then estrous period in the goat species. During 3 years, from 1996 to 1998, of 77 female Saanen goats, with as average production of 4.5 kg /milk/day, subjected to a two months long day photoperiod (16 h hight : 8 h darkness; LD) at the end of autumn / beginning winter, 71 responded positively to the male effect in spring, resulting in fertile breeding and a birth rate of 76 %,of which 53,8% by artificial insemination and 88.9% by natural breeding by bucks not subjected to a light treatment. Using the same breeding methods during the mating season, the birth rate was 91,7%, a significant difference (p<0.03) between the natural and artificial photoperiod. In spite of this different, the result of the group subjected to long days was important because of the anticipation by 5 months of the sexual season in a "natural" way, resulting in autumn births, and consequently, in milk production during the seasonal period where is has a strong demand for this goats product |
