Fertilizer (molybdenized superphosphate + urea) and grazing had marked effects on the botanical composition of a natural pasture dominated by Heteropogon contortus and Themeda australis, H. contortus was remarkably satble under all treatments. On the other
hand T. australis was relatively unstable, re maing unchanged in all unfertilized treatments
but declining in fertilized treatments, particularly those which were grazed. Bothriochloa decipiens, Chloris divaricata and Cynodon dactylon, which initially ocurred at low or negli-
gible frequencies, increased rapidly and largely exclusively in grazed, fetilized treatments.
Capillipedium spicigerum increased considerably in fertilized, ungrazed treatments and Fimbrystylis spp. in unfertilized treatments. Animals initially showed a preference for the fer-
tilized treatments in their grazing behaviour but this was reversed following the build up of the unpal atable species B. decipiens. There was no observed response to burning which
implies that the present vegetation, which itself has been induced by fire and grazing, is
very stable provided soil fertility remains unaltered. |
