Six year-old mango trees (Mangifera indica L.) cv. Nan Dok Mai Twai No. 4 planted in high density system (2.5mx 2,5m) were hard pruned. Three weeks later, as the new slushes expanded, paclobutrazol at the rate of 1.5 g/m2 was applied to soil by spraying the basin. During the experimental period, five vegetative flushes were observed. It was found that the third and fourth flushes of the treated trees were significantly shorter than that of the control, and their internodal lengths were remarkably reduced. The canopy sizes of the treated trees were remarkably reduced by 19.33 percent in height and 15.81 percent in density planting while the canopy of the control trees became overlapping. The paclobutrazol effect on growth lasted for only one year after whichnormal groeth resumed. The treated trees flowered more profusely and considerably earlier than the controls. |
